Going on the Defense with Broncos

Marco landed the Winchester next to his in-laws’ hacienda on Atlantis. The whole village turned out to watch. Ariel had called ahead the day before to let them know. It had been six months since the last visit coinciding with the Great Muturi Raid and its subsequent flood of refugees. Ten Muturi families had stayed close to learn the Earthlings'’ way of ranching. Nearly a hundred people watched the Winchester arrive along with another smaller ship the size of the Dorney but with three stubby pylons and skid landing gear. The cargo ramp of Winchester dropped, Ariel and Marco walked down.

“Ma, Pa, DeeDee we come bearing gifts,” Ariel said as she gave each a hug.

“You didn’t have to bring anything but yourself,” Ma said.

“What did you bring me, Marco?” Pa asked looking at the small ship settling next to them. Ma shot him a look.

“We brought some good toys Pa,” Marco said as he sidled up and threw his arm over Lyle’s shoulder. “But they are going to come with responsibilities.”

“This little ship?”

“Yes, and it has historical value so try not to break it. That ship fired the first shot against the Shaitans when we first went to Dragos. You can also use it to come to Earth through the Portals. There are seats for four now.” Marco said.

“A family sedan,” Lyle smiled.

“A family car that can kill starships,” the pilot said as he climbed down.

“This is Li. He is in Alicia’s squadron,” Ariel said.

“Pleased to meet you, Mr. Pettigrew,” Li said.

“Likewise. Call me Lyle. You’re one of the Taiwanese pilots I assume?”

“Yes sir. I met your daughter during the War of Mainland Aggression.”

“You’ve been in up to your neck for a long time then. Are you going to stay and train us to fly it?”

“The actual time has been only a couple of years, but it feels like this is a forever war,” Li said with a faraway look. “I’ll be here for a week or so, which may sound short but the spacefighter has an artificial intelligence now. That simplifies everything and there are neural helmets for continued training. Al has a program to follow.”

“Let’s go inside. Martha and the gals have a great West Texas BBQ laid out. You can tell us more over lunch,” Lyle pronounced to all and led the way inside the hacienda main gateway.

“That’s like churrasco?” Li asked Marco.

“Similar, but totally different,” he replied enigmatically.

“Inscrutable westerners,” Li mumbled as his belly rumbled from the tangy, smokey smell.

After lunch and catching up mainly on the adventures of DeeDee and her posse of Mexican kids, Marco got down to the details of local defense.

“You saw the spacefighter, but we also brought a few cases of AK 47s, ammo and anti-tank missiles which we hoped you could also teach the Muturi folks to use,” Marco said.

“When I told you we should arm up, this is a little more than I thought, Hermano,” Cisco said to Lyle.

“Better to have and not need,” Lyle replied nodding to Marco.
